Formed from the ashes of Asbestosdeath. Sleep split up in 1998; Matt Pike went on to form High on Fire, while Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius formed Om. A reunion took place in 2009, then Chris retired from music and was replaced by Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder.
Sleep songs “Dragonaut” and “Some Grass” are featured in the official soundtrack of the movie Gummo and can also be heard during the movie. The song “Dopesmoker” (highly shortened, obviously) was included in the official soundtrack of the movie Broken Flowers, directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Bill Murray and Sharon Stone.
The band announced they would go on indefinite hiatus starting January 1st, 2020.
