I’d never heard of any of the performers before purchasing this SACD but I wish I had because most of these works are great! They certain deserve more fame and recognition.
Many of the works are covers but each performer adds his or her own personality and style and makes it their own. The title “Jazz for the Wee Small Hours” captures the mood so well too. It’s a great late weekend night album – turn down the lights, pour a scotch or a glass of port and listen to songs that can touch your heart.
The sound quality on the SACD is wonderfully realistic. The mix tends to be close miked for the vocals which adds to the impact for this sort of music. Some of the horns are startling “there.”
I’ve all the High Note SACD releases and this is my favorite. There are quite the bargain for interesting music faithfully and tastefully recorded.
